Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya says he’s a better YouTuber than Smash Bros director Sakurai

Sassy video game director Hideki Kamiya is convinced that he’s a better YouTuber than friend and fellow gaming legend Masahiro Sakurai, as told in a May 2025 video.

Hideki Kamiya is known for producing legendary video games like Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe and Okami, as well as lending his expertise to series like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry.

He’s also known for his ‘take no sh*t’ demeanor on social media, regularly blocking and viciously roasting people who come after him online (or who speak to him in English, rather than Japanese).

Kamiya is a social media addict like the rest of us, regularly sending out a bevy of tweets on a daily basis — but did you know he’s also got a YouTube channel?

Kamiya’s channel uploads videos once or twice a month, where he answers questions from fans and speaks about his experience in the gaming industry… and he bets that his videos are more interesting than his colleagues’.

Hideki Kamiya roasts Sakurai’s YouTube channel

In a May 27 interview with MinnMax, he specifically mentioned Masahiro Sakurai, a legendary figure in the business known for directing the Super Smash Bros games. According to Kamiya, Sakurai’s informative gaming-focused YouTube videos ain’t got nothin’ on his content.

When asked if he was malding over Sakurai “making YouTube look so easy,” Kamiya hit back with a zinger: “Yeah, but I think my YouTube channel is much more interesting than Sakurai’s.”

(Topic begins at 2:09)

Kamiya is good friends with Sakurai, along with a slew of other top figures in Japan’s video game industry like Tekken producer/director Katsuhiro Harada and Square Enix’s Yoshi-P.

In fact, he often uploads photos with them taken from their hangouts drinking and eating together — something he surmises fans like quite a bit.

“I think people enjoy seeing what we do in our private lives,” he admitted.

Sakurai’s YouTube channel, Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games, uploaded its final video in 2024. Sakurai revealed that he’d spent over $600K on producing his videos, and said the channel made no money at all. (Kamiya, however, is still active on YouTube, where he boasts over 25K subscribers.)

This is the latest news from Kamiya after he reacted to fans’ calls for Bayonetta to be a guest character in Tekken 8. You can probably guess how that went.
