OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Scott McTominay scored twice in injury time as Manchester United beat Brentford 2-1 to breathe some life into their Premier League season.

The Red Devils lost a chaotic match at home to Galatasaray in the Champions League 3-2, meaning they have started their European campaign with consecutive defeats. They also came into this game on the back of four losses in five home games, meaning defeat was almost unthinkable for Erik ten Hag and his players.
Yet it looked like being just that in the October sunshine at Old Trafford. United fell behind midway through the first half to a Mathias Jensen goal — the first Brentford have ever scored at this stadium in the Premier League.
The match followed a similar pattern to the 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace a week ago, when United toiled in front of a disciplined defence and failed to create enough meaningful chances to snatch a result. An equaliser was disallowed for offside, a penalty appeal for a trip on Anthony Martial was dismissed, and Bruno Fernandes stung the palms of stand-in Brentford goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha.
Then, implausibly, it all changed in second-half stoppage time.
McTominay, on as a second-half substitute, squeezed in a clever finish from inside a crowded penalty area after good work from Alejandro Garnacho. Then came a winner that, from a Brentford perspective, was annoyingly route one: Fernandes’ long ball from a free-kick was headed down by Harry Maguire, and McTominay nodded the ball beyond Strakosha’s despairing grasp.
Starting lineups:
Man United (4-2-3-1, right to left): 24. Onana (GK) — 20. Dalot, 5. Maguire, 35. Evans, 2. Lindelof (9. Martial, 72′) — 18. Casemiro (14. Eriksen, 45′), 4. Amrabat (39. McTominay, 87′) — 8. Fernandes, 7. Mount (21. Antony, 63′), 10. Rashford (17. Garnacho, 63′) — 11. Hojlund
Brentford: (3-5-2, right to left): 21. Strakosha (GK) — 20. Ajer, 5. Pinnock, 22. Collins — 30. Roerslev, 8. Jensen, 6. Norgaard, 27. Janelt (15. Onyeka, 69′), 2. Hickey — 19. Mbeumo, 11. Wissa (7. Maupay, 69′)
Man United vs Brentford live updates, highlights, commentary
Fulltime: Man United 2-1 Brentford
Brentford barely have time to kick off before the final whistle sounds! Manchester United have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat here. What an astonishing end to the game. Scott McTominay might just have saved Erik ten Hag’s job.
90 + 7 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL! MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE WON IT! Fernandes sends a long free-kick into the box, Maguire heads it down, and McTominay nods it beyond Strakosha, who couldn’t keep it out! As route-one as they come, but it’s a goal that’s blown the leaking roof off Old Trafford!
90 + 6 mins: ALMOST A SECOND! A loose ball falls to Martial but his shot from inside the box is a comfortable save. Brentford are hanging on for a point.
90 + 3 mins: GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED EQUALISE! And this time, it counts! Garnacho twists and turns and just manages to squeeze in a cross before it goes out of play. Strakosha saves from Fernandes, but McTominay converts brilliantly on the rebound!
90 + 1 mins: Antony receives a lay-off from Garnacho but miskicks his shot. There are five minutes of added time left.
89th min: GOAL — NO! Disallowed! United think they’ve equalised after the ball deflects in off a Brentford knee, but Martial was offside when he flicked the ball across goal. The on-field decision was offside and the VAR check confirms it.
88th min: Brentford continue to defend well, although, as was the case with Crystal Palace, they’ve not really needed to do much more than hold position and clear crosses. United have simply been unable to play through them.
83rd min: ALMOST 2-0! Evans gives the ball to Maupay and Onana makes a flying stop to top over his shot from the edge of the area. From the resulting corner, Onan makes a much more difficult reaction save to tip over Christian Norgaard’s header.
79th min: United appeal for a penalty after Martial goes down under a challenge from Pinnock. There was contact, but the officials are unmoved. That was probably a fair decision.
76th min: GARNACHO! Big chance! Amrabat lays the ball off after good work from Antony and Dalot, but Garnacho’s shot is over the bar. He really should have hit the target from that position, inside the penalty area to the left of goal.
75th min: Antony leads a fast break after a Brentford throw-in, but his pass to Hojlund is ambitious and the striker is penalised for pushing over Onyeka. That was a wasted opportunity.
71st min: A snapshot from Fernandes is beaten away well by Strakosha. Anthony Martial is thrown on for Lindelof. The defender has gone straight down the tunnel.
69th min: There’s a break in play after Lindelof collided with Strakosha while trying to reach Maguire’s cross. Both men are okay to continue. Brentford make a couple of changes: Frank Onyeka and Neal Maupay are on.
66th min: Nathan Collins is booked for pulling over Antony. Eriksen’s free-kick into the box sails out for a goal kick, with barely a red shirt in sight.
62nd min: Mount lays the ball back to Dalot, who shoots over the bar. The midfielder goes off for Antony, while Marcus Rashford is replaced by Alejandro Garnacho.
57th min: Rashford plays a throughball to Lindelof, who wins a corner, but the delivery misses every red shirt in the box. United are pushing, but there’s so little inventiveness to their play, it’s hard to see where the goal will come from.
53rd min: Eriksen, apparently tired of short passes and boos from the Brentford fans, shoots from 25 yards out. Strakosha saves and can’t hold onto the ball, but no United player is following up.
50th min: It’s been all United early in this half, but they can’t pick their way through the Brentford defence. It’s been a very similar pattern to the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace a week ago. The home fans in the Stretford End have been singing non-stop for about 20 minutes, though, and none of it is in opposition to the players or manager.
Second half: Man United 0-1 Brentford
Brentford get the ball rolling. There’s been a change at halftime for United, with Casemiro replaced by Christian Eriksen.
Halftime: Man United 0-1 Brentford
I invite you to read the final first-half update as a summary of what is going on here. United trail yet again at Old Trafford after a goal from Mathias Jensen that came about because of three or four individual errors in the space of 15 seconds. In attack, they have offered absolutely no threat to Brentford’s back-up goalkeeper, Thomas Strakosha. The boos around Old Trafford as the halftime whistle sounded cannot come as a surprise.
Looking at @OptaSTATS‘s xGOT metric (the number of goals a keeper should expect to concede based on the quality of shots faced).
Onana has conceded 12 PL goals from xGOT of 9.77. The only PL keeper with a worse record this season is Mark Flekken, who’s ill and not playing here

45 + 2 mins: United have a free-kick near the centre circle. Onana sends everyone forward and kicks it towards Maguire on the right wing. Maguire falls over and is offside.
45th min: Casemiro loops a header back across goal and Hojlund somehow misses it completely when practically on the goal line. The offside flag was up anyway.
40th min: Courtesy of Opta: this is only the third time United have conceded the first goal in four consecutive Premier League games at Old Trafford. The previous occasions came under David Moyes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
4 – This is just the third time Manchester United have conceded the opening goal in four consecutive Premier League games at Old Trafford also doing so in February/March 2014 (W1 D1 L2) and in July/September 2020 (W1 D2 L1). Leaky. pic.twitter.com/p54i4RumAZ

37th min: Finally a save for Strakosha! Rashford does well to work space in the box and tries to pick out the bottom-left corner, but the Brentford keeper gets down well to save. At the other end, Mbeumo curls a shot goalwards but it bounces wide.
33rd min: United haven’t really responded to falling behind. They still haven’t created a meaningful chance, and Thomas Strakosha in goal is having a far quieter Premier League debut for the Bees than he might have expected.
26th min: GOAL FOR BRENTFORD! It’s another horror-show at the back from United and the visitors lead at Old Trafford! It all started with Casemiro giving the ball away in his own half. Nobody challenged Wissa as he ran into the area, and although his pass was poor, Lindelof played it straight back against him. Jensen shot goalwards, it took a slight nick off Lindelof, and Onana couldn’t keep it out.

22nd min: Chance for Mount! Andre Onana’s raking pass releases Fernandes, who squares the ball to United’s No.7. Pinnock gets across to make a good block inside the penalty area.
20th min: Some sustained pressure from United but Brentford’s back three repels a succession of crosses. They win a free-kick on the break, 35 yards from goal, but Bryan Mbeumo’s delivery misses its target.
17th min: Another Brentford corner ends in another Hickey shot that flies off target. It’s clearly a tactic they’ve been working on.
12th min: Better from United as Fernandes’ first-time cross is just hooked away from Rasmus Hojlund by Ethan Pinnock. The game is then stopped as the United striker just got caught by the ball in his eye.
10th min: It’s probably no surprise given the makeshift lineup, but United’s defence is looking uncomfortable on the left. They seem unsure who should track runs and who should defend the box. So far, Brentford haven’t made much use of that uncertainty.
4th min: Brentford win the first corner as Lindelof blocks a cross from Mathias Jensen behind. They work it to the edge of the box and Aaron Hickey tries a shot, but it curls over the bar.
1st min: Victor Lindelof is playing at left-back today, with Diogo Dalot on the right. Sofyan Amrabat gets his first taste of partnering Casemiro in midfield. It looks like Bruno Fernandes is starting on the right in attack.
Kickoff!
After messing it up at first, United kick us off in the surprisingly warm October sunshine.
10 mins to KO: There’s a warm round of applause from the United and Brentford fans in recognition of Cathy Ferguson, the wife of former Red Devils manager Alex Ferguson. Cathy passed away this week at the age of 84. United players are wearing black armbands today in recognition.
30 mins to KO: The last time Maguire and Evans started a Premier League game together was for Leicester City back in 2019. But needs must for Erik ten Hag, who is missing his entire first-choice defence through injury. Moving Sofyan Amrabat to midfield may also help prevent Casemiro becoming as isolated as he has in recent weeks.
We’re half an hour away from kickoff and the sun has come out. It’s a good day for it.

Team news
It’s an interesting one for Man United — Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans start at the heart of defence! The last time those two played together was in the closing minutes against Arsenal, when the Gunners scored two late goals to win 3-1. Raphael Varane has a “minor” issue that keeps him out.

Brentford are without goalkeeper Mark Flekken, who came down with illness today. Keane Lewis-Potter misses out with a calf injury for the Bees, who look like they will start in a 3-5-2 system.

1 hour 40 mins before KO: An important charity drive is taking place before and after today’s game at Old Trafford: fans and visitors can donate unwanted coats and warm clothes to the Manchester United Foundation’s winter coat appeal, which will be used to help some of the poorest families in the city and surrounding area.
If anyone going to Old Trafford today can donate, then please do (you can do it before or after the game). There are donation bins at the bag drop locations around the stadium. I went to the one in the car park outside the Sir Alex Ferguson stand (dead easy to find)#MUFC https://t.co/1NhwUFdX1b

2 hours before KO: There’s little immediate sense that Erik ten Hag’s job is under threat at Manchester United, but another disappointing result today would increase the pressure on his position, especially given we’re heading into an international break, when the analysis is likely to intensify. Can his players perform for him today?
