The head of MI5 has issued a warning about Russia’s efforts to create chaos on UK streets. In a comprehensive speech, director general Ken McCallum highlighted the increasing threats from “Putin’s henchmen” and a series of plots orchestrated by Iran. In his first speech in two years, Mr McCallum painted a picture of a multifaceted threat landscape for the UK. This includes resurgent terrorist organisations like Al Qaeda and IS, as well as state-sponsored terrorism from countries such as Iran and Russia. He revealed that state threat work has increased by 48% over the past year. Since January 2022, MI5 and police have responded to 20 potentially lethal plots backed by Iran.

One in eight individuals under MI5 investigation is under 18, a statistic that Mr McCallum found surprising. He noted that most threats come from lone individuals indoctrinated online, making the task of identifying real plotters challenging. MI5’s protective security arm, the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), offers counter-sabotage support to businesses.
Overall, the statistic that 13% of those under investigation are children represents a three-fold increase in three years.
