Jenna Fischer reveals breast cancer diagnosis, urges annual mammograms

Jenna Fischer, known for her role as Pam Beesley on The Office, has disclosed her private battle with breast cancer over the past year. In an Instagram post, Fischer shared her experience in honour of breast cancer awareness month. “Back in October 2023, I posted a photo preparing for my routine mammogram with a joke about ‘ticking time bags’ inspired by Michael Scott,” she wrote.

Due to dense breast tissue, her initial mammogram results were inconclusive, leading her doctor to order a breast ultrasound. This revealed an anomaly in her left breast, necessitating a biopsy. “On December 1, 2023, I learned I had Stage 1 Triple Positive Breast Cancer,” she revealed. Although aggressive, this type of cancer responds well to treatment. In January, she underwent a lumpectomy to remove the tumour.

Fortunately, the cancer had not spread, but due to its aggressive nature, chemotherapy and radiation were necessary to prevent its return. “Starting in February, I had 12 weekly rounds of chemotherapy, and in June, I began three weeks of radiation. I’m still receiving Herceptin infusions and taking Tamoxifen daily, but I’m feeling great,” she shared. Fischer also discussed her chemotherapy journey, the support from her family, and the importance of annual mammograms.

“I’m announcing this now for a few reasons. Firstly, I’m ready to stop wearing wigs. Secondly, I urge everyone to get their annual mammograms. Ask your doctor to calculate your Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score and get any additional screenings needed. Seriously, call your doctor now,” Fischer advised.

Fischer also announced that she is currently cancer-free but continues to undergo treatment during remission. “I’m thrilled to report that recent screenings show the treatments have worked. I am cancer-free, but I will continue to be monitored and treated to maintain that status,” she shared.

“Don’t skip your mammogram. Listen to Pam and her Pam Pams. Michael was right. Get checked, ladies. And if you receive a breast cancer diagnosis, remember there’s a community ready to support you,” she concluded.
