Baroness Sayeeda Warsi has resigned from the Conservative Party, citing the party’s shift towards the ‘far-right’. Warsi, the first Muslim woman to serve in a British cabinet, was a former co-chair of the Conservative Party and resigned from David Cameron’s government in 2014. She continues to serve as a peer in the House of Lords.

In a tweet earlier today, Warsi expressed her regret: “It is with a heavy heart that I have today informed my whip and decided for now to no longer take the @Conservatives whip. This is a sad day for me. I am a Conservative and remain so but sadly the current party are far removed from the party I joined and served in cabinet.”

Warsi attributed her resignation to the party’s shift to the right and its treatment of various communities, highlighting issues she discusses in her book “Muslims Don’t Matter”.

Her resignation follows her criticism of Tory leadership frontrunner Robert Jenrick. Jenrick suggested that protestors shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ should be arrested. Warsi responded on X: “Everyday before we start parliamentary business in the Commons and Lords we say a prayer and praise God – we say our parliamentary version of Allah hu Akbars at the heart of democracy – a process Robert Jenrick is a part of. This language from Jenrick is more of his usual nasty divisive rhetoric – he is such a tool.”

Warsi has consistently criticised Islamophobia within the Conservative Party. She resigned from the government in 2014, condemning the Cameron administration’s stance on Gaza as ‘morally indefensible’. In her resignation letter from that year, she stated that the government’s approach and language during the Gaza crisis were against Britain’s national interest and would harm its reputation both internationally and domestically.
