Couple married 78 years celebrate 100th birthdays together

A married couple who met 80 years ago at a cocktail bar have celebrated their 100th birthdays together. Peter and Peggie Taylor wed 78 years ago following a chance meeting during a night out in 1944. Now, they have both reached the age of 100, with Peter celebrating on April 11 and Peggie on August 26.

Peter described the experience of sharing this milestone as “quite emotional,” with 14 of their 17 great-grandchildren joining the celebrations. He mentioned, “We have enjoyed a wonderfully happy few weeks with our family, friends, and neighbours.” The Taylors, both in good health, credit their long lives to “simple joys and mutual respect.”

They are among Britain’s oldest couples but are surpassed by Dorothy Walter, 103, and her husband Tim, 102, from Wingham, Kent, who married 81 years ago. Peter and Peggie have lived in Crewe, Cheshire, since childhood after their families relocated there for railway jobs.

The couple first met at Kettell’s bar in Crewe during the Second World War. Peter served as an aircrew member flying Lancaster bombers, and Peggie worked as a land girl in the Women’s Land Army.

Peter retired as the headteacher of Wistaston Green Primary School and serves as life president of South West Cheshire Scouts as a couple.
