Portland State’s game against South Dakota was postponed just before kickoff after several Vikings players were struck with whooping cough.

The team announced the decision hours before the game, saying “many players” in its soccer program had been affected by the disease.

A statement on the athletics school’s website said: ‘Two days ago, the Viking team was diagnosed with a case of whooping cough.

‘Whooping cough is a highly contagious disease that affects the lungs. As a result, many team members have been exposed to the disease.’

They added that no players are currently seriously ill, but team doctors at both Portland State and South Dakota decided it was best to cancel the game.

“We are in contact with Portland State administration and will continue to be as we continue to monitor the situation regarding next Saturday’s game. Our highest priority and concern is the health and safety of everyone involved.”

Before the game at Hillsboro Stadium, Portland State and South Dakota were tied 0-2 and 1-1.
