Businessman and Safina Party leader Jimi Wanjigi’s woes with law enforcement look far from over and having to deal with several police raids at his house in Muthaiga, he has come out to reveal that law enforcement officers have been keeping him under surveillance for one week.

Wanjigi on Friday, September 13 claimed on X that the authorities have been stalking him through vehicles parked outside his house without number plates, an ordeal he says has been going on for one week.

“Why are unmarked vehicles outside my residence in Muthaiga for the last one week? This is clearly harassment on me and my family, this surveillance is unprecedented!” he lamented.

To make matters worse, according to him, the occupants of the vehicles have been blocking all communication to his residence, and going by those photos, the vehicles are clearly equipped with antennas, which could explain why he couldn’t even make or receive calls in devices within his home.

“These vehicles are jamming all communication to my residence!” he lamented, outlining the pitfalls that Wanjigi and his family have been through ever since police raided his residence last month.

Those antennas have mobile phone jammers or blockers which are devices that deliberately transmit signals on the same radio frequencies as mobile phones, disrupting the communication between the phone and the cell phone base station. This effectively disables mobile phones within the range of the jammer, preventing them from receiving signals and from transmitting them.

Jammers can be used in practically any location, but are found primarily in places where a phone call would be particularly disruptive because silence is expected, such as entertainment venues.

Because they disrupt the operations of legitimate mobile phone services, the use of such blocking devices is illegal in many jurisdictions, especially without a licence. When operational, such devices also block access to emergency services.

Wanjigi has been at loggerheads with the authorities following a raid that was conducted at his Muthaiga home in August. During the raid, police were unable to track the businessman at his mansion and a few days later, he presented himself to the police for questioning.

Eventually, Wanjigi was arrested and later released. He also obtained court orders restraining the police from arresting him.

Recently, the High Court in Nairobi blocked Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin from accessing his residence, with the court further demanding that the duo return all the items that belonged to the politician confiscated by security agencies.

The vocal businessman listed 36 items including high-end smartphones, laptops, jewellery and cash, all worth over Ksh8.5 million which he claimed were stolen during the raid.

The businessman has been accused of funding the Gen Z protests that were witnessed in the country for the better part of June and July, which began following the tabling of the Finance Bill 2023 which recommended new tax proposals.
