These facilities generate highly enriched uranium, a crucial component for nuclear warheads, by spinning the raw material in centrifuges at high speeds. Kim visited the Nuclear Weapons Institute and the “production base of weapon-grade nuclear materials,” according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The location and date of the visit were not disclosed.
State media published images of Kim inspecting rows of centrifuges and reported that he emphasised the need to significantly increase the number of centrifuges to boost the nuclear arsenal for self-defence. Kim familiarised himself with the production of nuclear warheads and current nuclear materials.

The North Korean leader was briefed on the facility’s dynamic production of nuclear materials, which involves studying, developing, and introducing various system elements, including centrifugal separators. Kim urged the facility to advance the introduction of a new type of centrifuge to further strengthen the foundation for producing weapon-grade nuclear materials. He also highlighted the necessity of setting higher long-term goals for the production of necessary nuclear materials.
Despite UN sanctions banning North Korea’s nuclear weapons programmes, the country has consistently defied these restrictions, partly due to support from allies Russia and China.
Experts suggest the unexpected public revelation of the uranium enrichment facility could be intended to influence the upcoming US presidential election in November. According to Hong Min, a senior analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, the images send a message to the next administration that denuclearising North Korea is impossible. It also demands that other countries acknowledge North Korea as a nuclear state. However, Hong believes another nuclear test is unlikely to follow this disclosure soon.
Recently, Pyongyang reported that heavy rainfall in late July caused fatalities, flooded homes, and submerged farmland near its northern regions close to China. A report from 38 North, a North Korean analysis programme run by the Stimson Centre think-tank, revealed that floodwaters had damaged North Korea’s main nuclear test site.
The main nuclear test site is in poor condition, with all roads and railways lost due to rain damage and significantly weakened ground, Hong added. Relations between North and South Korea are at a low point, with the North recently deploying 250 ballistic missile launchers to its southern border. Additionally, the North has been sending trash-carrying balloons to the South, including a five-day blitz last week.
On Thursday, Seoul reported that the North had fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles into waters east of the Korean peninsula. However, KCNA stated in a separate dispatch that this was a test of a “new-type 600mm multiple rocket launcher” overseen by Kim.
