Kate Winslet defends natural body in response to crew member’s comment

Kate Winslet had a brilliant comeback for a crew member who suggested she hide her ‘belly rolls’.

Winslet, 48, portrays Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller in her upcoming movie *Lee*, set to premiere in UK cinemas on 13 September and in the US on 27 September.

Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller, the character Winslet plays, transitions from a model to a photographer, documenting World War II’s harrowing events for Vogue.

Unlike many Hollywood stars who follow intense fitness regimes before filming, Winslet chose to stop working out to maintain a ‘genuinely soft’ body.

Discussing her choice to represent a natural woman’s shape, Winslet told the BBC: “It was my duty to embody Lee. She wasn’t into weightlifting or Pilates. She enjoyed cheese, bread, and wine without making a fuss. Naturally, her body would be soft.”

She further mentioned that women should embrace ‘real shapes, softness, and even a few extra rolls’.

During the shooting of *Lee*, a crew member suggested Winslet adjust her posture to hide her rolls.

Narrating the incident to Harper’s Bazaar, Winslet said: “There’s a scene where Lee sits on a bench in a bikini. A crew member approached me between takes and said, ‘You might want to sit up straighter.’ ‘So you can’t see my belly rolls? Not a chance!’ It was intentional.”

Winslet added, “I take pride in my appearance because it reflects my life, and that’s important. I would never consider hiding it.”

Regrettably, Winslet is accustomed to unkind comments about her body. She previously addressed remarks about her Titanic character, Rose, being ‘too fat’ for Jack to fit on the door at the film’s end.

In a 2022 appearance on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Winslet expressed her frustration over the issue.

“Apparently, I was too fat,” she stated. “They were so mean. I wasn’t even fat.”

She expressed regret for not confronting the comments at the time.

“If I could go back, I would have used my voice differently,” she said about her younger self.

“I would have told journalists, ‘Don’t you dare treat me like this. I’m a young woman, my body is changing, I’m figuring it out, I’m deeply insecure, I’m terrified, don’t make this harder for me.’

“That’s bullying, and borderline abusive,” she concluded.

In a world filled with insecurity, we should all strive to be more like Kate.
