A fond farewell: Queen Letizia joins King Felipe at the funeral of his late cousin Juan Gómez-Acebo in Madrid

Queen Letizia and King Felipe VI led mourners at the funeral of the Spanish king’s nephew, Juan Gómez-Acebo, in Madrid on Sunday.

Juan died on August 12 at the age of 54 from complications of cancer, less than six months after his younger brother Fernando Gomez-Acebo passed away at the age of 49.

Juan’s funeral took place at the Armed Forces Cathedral in the Spanish capital and was also attended by King Felipe’s parents: former monarch King Juan Carlos I, 86, and Queen Sofia of Spain, 85.

According to Spanish publication AllAlicanteJuan, the son of Infanta Pilar and Luis Gómez-Acebo, kept a low profile after studying visual arts and worked as a painter.

Before his death, Juan was in a relationship with architect Teresa Véret. He also had a son, Nicholas, 11, from his first marriage to Winston Holmes Carney.

Both the king and queen, as well as the other attendees, were dressed in black for this solemn event.

Queen Letizia, 51, was tanned after the Spanish royal family’s annual summer holiday in Mallorca. She wore a demure black A-line dress with puffed sleeves, which she accessorized with a string of pearls.

She added a pair of black patent leather high heels and a small leather handbag.

The mother of two wore her shoulder-length, brown hair parted to the side and brushed behind her ears, revealing a pair of silver and pearl earrings.

King Felipe, 56, meanwhile, looked stylish in a black suit with a white shirt and black tie.

Queen Sofia of Spain looked equally formal in a long, pleated black skirt and a black jacket with embroidery on the shoulders, which she paired with black block-heeled shoes.

The elegant mother of King Felipe wore three pearl necklaces around her neck and a pair of dainty earrings. On her right wrist she also wore several bracelets.

Her husband, Juan Carlos I, who used a cane, chose a navy blue suit to pay his last respects to Juan Gómez-Acebo.

The King and Queen’s daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, were apparently not present.

It was not until April that Queen Letizia and King Felipe attended the funeral of Juan’s younger brother, Fernando Gomez-Acebo, who died of Covid-19 on March 1 at the age of 49.

The royal couple looked somber as they paid their respects to King Felipe’s nephew during mass at Madrid’s Castrense Cathedral.

Fernando was the nephew of the Spanish monarch and a cousin of King Juan Carlos.

He was the youngest son of Infanta Pilar and Luis Gómez-Acebo.

When King Felipe and Queen Letizia arrived at the funeral Mass, they were greeted by a waving crowd.

There was a melancholy atmosphere as they walked hand in hand through the cathedral grounds.

Queen Letizia wore a tight black dress for the occasion with details at the waist and cuffs.

She completed her outfit with a black leather handbag and a beautiful pearl brooch.

Queen Letizia kept her makeup subtle and wore her brunette locks in a simple style.

King Felipe paid his respects to his nephew in a navy double-breasted blazer and matching trousers, teamed with a crisp white shirt and black tie.

Fernando’s funeral came shortly after another poignant event for the Spanish royal family: a memorial service for victims of terrorism.

At the memorial service to commemorate the nearly 200 victims of the 2004 Madrid train bombing, Queen Letizia looked elegant in a long-sleeved navy dress.

For the event, which took place at the Royal Collection Gallery in Spain, the royal paired her outfit with matching kitten heels and a leather clutch.
