The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the temporary closure of 14 major roads within Nairobi to facilitate the 2024 Nairobi City Marathon.
According to a statement released by KeNHA on Saturday, September 7, 2024, the closures will take place on Sunday, September 8, 2024, from midnight to 2.00 pm.
1. Expressway
Between James Gichuru and JKIA on both sides, from Saturday, September 7, 10:00 pm to Sunday, September 8, 3:00 pm.
2. Waiyaki Way
Between James Gichuru and the entrance to the Expressway, the two inner lanes on both sides will be closed from midnight to 10:00 am.
3. Thika Superhighway
The exit from A2 to Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road direction, will be closed from midnight to 1:00 pm.
4. Harry Thuku Road
Closed from midnight to 2:00 PM.
5. University Way
Between Highway Roundabout and Harry Thuku on both sides, closed from midnight to 2:00 pm.
6. Koinange Street
Between University Way and Kenyatta Avenue, closed from midnight to 2:00 pm.
7. Kenyatta Avenue
Between Koinange Street and Wabera Street, closed from midnight to 2:00 PM.
8. City Hall Way
Between Wabera Street and Taifa Road, closed from midnight to 2:00 pm.
9. Harambee Avenue
Between Haile Selassie Avenue, closed from midnight to 2:00 pm.
10. Mombasa Road & Southern Bypass
The section between the Expressway exit and the Southern Bypass entrance will be closed from midnight to 11:00 am.
11. Uhuru Highway
Both sides between Popo Road Roundabout and A2 Thika will be closed from midnight to 2:00 pm.
12. Lang’ata Road
Between Douglas Wakiihuri Road and Uhuru Highway, closed from midnight to 2:00 pm.
13. Wakilihuri Road
Closed from midnight to 2:00 pm.
14. Bunyala Road
Between Bunyala Roundabout and Enterprise Road, closed from midnight to 2:00 pm.
To ease traffic congestion, KeNHA recommended alternative routes for motorists:
- James Gichuru Road
- Muthangari Road
- Lang’ata Road
- Ring Road
- Juja Road
- Kenyatta Avenue
- Outer Ring Road
Additional alternatives include:
- Nairobi Ring Road Network
- Moi Avenue
- University Way
- Murang’a Road
- Local and smaller streets
For those travelling to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, they are advised to consider using Airport North Road or Uhuru Highway.
