Muthama calls for govt to intervene following capture of Kenyan female truck driver in DRC

Commissioner of Parliamentary Service Commission Johnson Muthama has called on the government to intervene following the capture of Kenyan truck driver Grace Wanza Munyao in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a statement on Monday, September 2, 2024, Muthama said that Grace was captured by Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).

Grace is reported to have been captured in DRC on August 27, 2024.

“I am asking Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who also serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, to urgently secure the release of Grace Wanza Munyao, a Kenyan citizen and truck driver who was captured by the FDLR, one of Kinshasa’s coalition forces, on August 27, 2024,” Muthama stated.

DRC peace agreement

According to a statement from the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), there has been a violation of the peace agreement by coalition forces of the Kinshasa regime, mainly the FARDC, FDLR, Mercenaries, Mai-Mai/Wazalendo Militias, the National Defense Forces of Burundi, SADC Forces and MONUSCO.

AFC is a movement operating in Eastern DRC and is openly associated with several non-governmental groups, including the March 23 Movement /Congolese Revolutionary Army (M23/ARC).

“The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) draws the attention of both the national and international community to the ongoing violations of the peace by the coalition forces of the Kinshasa regime, mainly the FARDC, FDLR, Mercenaries, Mai-Mai/Wazalendo Militias, the National Defense Forces of Burundi, SADC Forces and MONUSCO,” AFC stated.

“The AFC takes as witness regional leaders and international partners, whose efforts to resolve the conflict in Eastern DRC are increasingly jeopardised by this latest deliberate peace violation.”

AFC says Grace was captured on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at noon in Kiseguro, within the Binza grouping.

“The same FDLR continue to threaten local agricultural activities through kidnappings and looting, thereby spreading terror and insecurity. Our organisation stands shoulder to shoulder with our compatriots and reiterates its commitment to protecting them and defending their rights against these acts,” AFC stated.

The government of Kenya has yet to issue a statement on the capture.
