I’m an architect – these are the mistakes you are making with your bedroom and why I will NEVER have a walk-in wardrobe

An architect has listed the biggest mistakes homeowners make when designing their bedrooms and why she despises a popular feature that most people dream of.

Georgina Wilsonfrom Sydney has over twenty years of experience in residential design and has seen many clients make choices that they have had to correct in future renovations.

She advised against using outdated layouts, walk-in closets and ceiling lighting above the mirror.

Georgina also revealed five inexpensive home improvements you can make without renovation that will freshen up your style.

“Never build a walk-in closet,” Georgina warned, despite it being a lifelong dream for many women.

Most homeowners don’t realize how much space a walk-in closet needs to be worth the wasted space.

“A really good walk-in is the same size — or bigger — than a bedroom. They’re inherently inefficient,” she said.

‘Only do this if you have the space to stoke the fire and are prepared to clear an entire room for this.’

Georgina also warned against placing wardrobes along the longest walls of your bedroom, as this will make the space appear rectangular, making it harder to style.

“The closet should always be placed along the shorter wall so that you have more of a square space to organize,” she said.

Another mistake homeowners should avoid when placing their closet is placing it in a spot where they will “step right into it” as soon as they enter.

“I see this all the time and I can only come to one conclusion: the placement of the clothes is of secondary importance,” says Georgina.

To save space, the architect suggested that parents should always consider “cloffices” for their children: a desk built into the side of a cabinet and wall.

“A cloffice is the most efficient way to place a desk, especially in a teen’s room,” she said.

In addition to where you place your wardrobe, you should also think about where to place your mirror.

“Never forget to light your mirror properly. The same rules apply to sinks. Make sure your lights are on either side of the mirror and not directly overhead,” the architect said.

Placing lighting directly above your mirror will make it look severe and will emphasize certain features that you may not like.
