Nineteen-year-old Ian Njoroge has publicly apologized for his actions following an incident where he assaulted a traffic police officer on Kamiti Road. The assault was captured in a video which went viral. His apology came after he was released on a Sh700,000 bond. And thanks to the intervention of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who offered his car as surety.
In a meeting facilitated by Sonko, Ian Njoroge expressed deep regret for his actions, offering apologies to both Kenyans and the assaulted officer, Jacob Ogendo, 57.
“I am sorry and it will never happen again,” Njoroge contritely stated.
Njoroge’s parents also extended their apologies, with his mother thanking Sonko for his support in securing Ian’s release from remand. His father emphasized their regret, particularly towards the police force.
Sonko Intervenes for Ian Njoroge
Sonko, speaking at the meeting, highlighted the importance of nurturing young people rather than condemning them for their mistakes.
He expressed confidence that Ian had learned a valuable lesson and showed a commitment to personal growth and positive change.
“To the National Police Service and all the officers, we apologize on behalf of Ian,” Sonko said.
He also mentioned plans to arrange counseling for Ian before he returns to school in September, ensuring he receives the necessary guidance and mentorship to prevent future incidents.
Ian Njoroge’s release came after Milimani Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi dismissed the prosecution’s request to detain him. The magistrate ruled that the claims of Njoroge being a flight risk or facing danger from other officers were unsupported by evidence.
Ekhubi further noted that the charge of robbery with violence against Njoroge was unconstitutional, referencing a High Court ruling that declared section 96 (2) of the Penal Code, under which the charge was filed, unconstitutional.
