A 71-year-old man admitted to poisoning his wife’s soda with drugs to kill her and marry her daughter. Alfred Ruf, hailing from Indiana, pleaded guilty in July to aggravated battery for the attempted poisoning of his wife. He confessed to police that he had been spiking her drinks with a substance provided by her daughter from a previous marriage.
In January 2022, during an interview with deputies, Ruf disclosed his sexual relationship with his wife’s 31-year-old daughter. He revealed that she had given him a pill bottle containing a powdered substance in September 2021, instructing him to put it in her mother’s drink.
Ruf claimed the drugs would make his wife sleep for about 13 hours. During that time, the daughter and her friend performed sexual acts in his wife’s negligees. An affidavit detailed how Ruf would sprinkle the white powder into his wife’s Coca-Cola and wait for her to fall asleep. Then, the women would come to his home, add more unknown substances to his wife’s drink, and have her consume it.

Court documents noted that the daughter wanted to “get mom out of the picture” after discovering the home was being sold and mentioned her mother’s life insurance policy. Ruf admitted to spiking his wife’s drinks 12 times between September and December 2021, intending to kill her and marry her daughter afterward.
Ruf’s wife alerted the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department about his actions. She provided a pill bottle with the white substance and a Coca-Cola can cut open to show an off-white residue at the bottom. Hospital tests revealed she had MDMA, cocaine, and benzodiazepines in her system, which she denied taking.
Ruf confessed because he felt guilty. His defense attorney, John Lawrence Tompkins, stated, “Once the state changed the nature of the offense, he took responsibility for what he did wrong. That’s the appropriate thing to do.”
On Monday, August 26, court records from Indiana show Ruf received a sentence of four years in prison and five years on probation for the offence.
