New KICC chairperson Irungu Nyakera promises to beat Kigali, make KICC premier international conference centre

The new Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) chairperson Irungu Nyakera has promised to transform the facility into a premier international conference destination.

Nyakera, who toured the building on Monday, August 26, 2024, promised to rival leading conference destinations including Kigali, Lagos and Cape Town.

“Following the appointment to Chair the KICC Board by HE the President, today I made a familiarization tour of @KICC_kenya with the CEO and his team. I affirmed my commitment to support the growth and turnaround of KICC, making it a premier international conference destination and rivalling other regional powerhouses including Kigali, Lagos and Cape Town,” Nyakera stated.

Nyakera appointed KICC chairperson

Nyakera was the chairperson of the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) since May 15, 2023, before his appointment was revoked last week.

He was replaced as KEMSA chairperson by Narok Governor Samuel Tunai, who was appointed through a Gazette Notice dated August 22, 2024.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 5 (1) (a) of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I (President William Ruto) appoint Samuel Tunai as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority,” the notice reads in part.

Tunai is set to serve for a period of three years, with the appointment taking effect on August 23, 2024.

“The appointment of Irungu Nyakera is revoked,” Ruto said.

Nyakera will serve for a period of three years.

Nyakera replaced Adelina Mwau as KICC chairperson, whose appointment was revoked.
