Authorities have commenced an investigation after a gardener discovered four grenades in bushes near Los Angeles on Thursday. A bomb squad from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) responded to the report from a gardener in Baldwin Park, California, who found the grenades along Merced Avenue.
The Baldwin Park Police Department confirmed the grenades were Russian in style but provided no further details. LASD bomb technicians secured the grenades and declared them safe. The street and neighbourhood were reopened after an all-clear was given.
Sgt. Jose Eguia of LASD informed FOX 11 that the grenades were identified as Russian-styled F-1 grenades. Eguia evaluated all four devices, finding three to be safe, while the fourth was identified as a functioning explosive.

The FBI’s Los Angeles field office is collaborating with LASD and Baldwin Park police to trace the grenades’ origin. Baldwin Park is located roughly 20 miles east of Los Angeles.
