Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) officials from Nyeri county have urged parents not to take their children back to school for the third term as teachers will not report to work.
The teachers took to the streets of Nyeri town on Monday, August 26 carrying placards and chanting slogans and vowed not to resume classes until the government addressed their demands.
Nyeri County branch secretary Francis Wanjohi said the strike is on and asked parents to stay with their children at home until they call off the industrial action.
“We have entered day one of the industrial action today and we urge the parents to stay with their children at home until when the strike will be called off because no teacher will report to school,” Wanjohi said.
He also cautioned teachers against reporting to work at schools, saying that the strike is legal and therefore they should participate in it fully until the government heeds to their demands.
“We have heard that some h**d teachers are calling for staff meetings and we want to caution our teachers not to attend such meetings. They should stay away from schools until the government meets phase two of the collective bargaining agreement,” he said.
Wanjohi added that the Junior Secondary school teachers should be absorbed in permanent and pensionable terms and should not be hired on a contract basis.
The officials lashed at the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) for calling off their strike without having any agreement with the government.
“We want to assure our members that our strike is still on. KNUT officials called off their strike even without any agreement with the government but we will not relent,” he said.
