Five dead in Long Island murder-suicide before house sale meeting

A tragic murder-suicide on Long Island, New York, resulted in five deaths just before a family meeting with a realtor to discuss selling a deceased woman’s home.

Nassau County police reached the Wyoming Court residence in Syosset around noon Sunday, about 30 miles from New York City. Authorities discovered the gunman outside, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot, with four more victims inside the house.

The identities of the victims in the murder-suicide were not immediately disclosed by the police.

Local realtor Mary Macaluso mentioned to Newsday she was scheduled to meet the family regarding the sale of the house following the death of its owner and family matriarch. “The children were here for the funeral and requested I look at the house,” she said. A sibling reportedly arranged the meeting while other relatives were visiting from Florida.

Records and an obituary indicate that Theresa Martha DeLucia, 95, was the home’s recent resident and was buried last week.

The online obituary was no longer accessible by Sunday evening.

Neighbours told FOX 5 New York that the alleged gunman, in his 60s, had recently lost his mother, who was in her 90s. The mother and son had resided in the neighbourhood for many years.

One neighbour expressed disbelief with the murder-suidice, noting, “I didn’t think he’d harm his entire family. I thought he might only harm himself.” Another neighbour remarked, “This is really heartbreaking. This quiet neighbourhood used to be called a bedroom community. It’s shocking.”

The home was not yet listed for sale, though Zillow estimated its value at nearly $900,000. Nearby homes have sold for close to $1 million, according to the site.
