Alaska governor declares disaster following landslide in Ketchikan

Alaska’s governor has declared a disaster after a landslide prompted an evacuation in the city of Ketchikan.

The landslide around 4 p.m. Sunday damaged homes and infrastructure in the town, which is being assisted by the State Emergency Operation Center, Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy said in a statement.

“I have directed state agencies to make all resources and personnel available for the response,” Dunleavy said.

There are no immediate reports of injuries.

Authorities in the southeastern Alaska city have issued an evacuation order for areas near the landslide and opened a shelter at the high school, the statement said.

Several local and state agencies have responded. A Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Response Specialist and personnel from the federal Department of Transportation are expected to travel to Ketchikan on Monday, the statement said.

Ketchikan police and fire officials did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press requesting additional information.
