AP Source: Biden to dispatch adviser to China as he looks to sharpen policy focus in final months

BUELLTON, California — President Joe Biden plans to send his national security adviser Jake Sullivan to China as the White House looks to focus more on foreign policy in the Democrat’s final months in office.

Sullivan’s visit to meet with his counterpart Wang Yi is expected to take place next week, a person familiar with the planning of the trip said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The White House is expected to announce plans for the trip later today.

Sullivan has spoken to Chinese officials several times during his tenure about the complicated relationship between the two economic rivals, but this is his first visit to China.

The expected announcement comes while Biden is vacationing in California’s Santa Ynez Valley.
