Unsettled and cool bank holiday weather across the UK

This week has felt autumnal for many, with wind and rain making frequent appearances. However, the weather for the bank holiday remains uncertain. A news agency weather producer, predicts an unsettled and cool weekend, though not a complete washout.

Storm Lilian, the 12th named storm this season, is affecting the UK. Two yellow rain warnings are in place for south-west Scotland and the Aberdeenshire coast until 9 am on Friday. The Met Office forecasts possible thunder and 20-30mm of rainfall in these regions, with higher ground potentially seeing 40-50mm.

Additionally, a yellow warning is in effect until 11 am on Friday for parts of northern England, north Wales, and south-west Scotland, with gusts expected to reach 50-60mph. As the bank holiday weekend begins, the RAC estimates 19.2 million leisure trips by car, with 3.2 million on Friday alone. Events such as the sold-out Reading and Leeds festivals and Creamfields are also scheduled.

Early heavy showers on Saturday may give way to settled conditions in southern and eastern England and Wales, featuring sunny spells and occasional scattered showers.

The Met Office predicts an unsettled weekend for the North and North West, with persistent rain expected, especially in western Scotland and Northern Ireland. Temperatures in the South East will reach 21C on Saturday and Sunday, and 23C on Monday, slightly below average.

On Sunday, southern Britain and Ireland will likely remain dry with some sunshine, while showers or longer rain spells will affect other areas. The weather will stay cool and blustery, particularly in the North.

The pattern continues on bank holiday Monday, with southern and eastern Britain expected to be mostly dry with sunny spells, while the North and West will experience more wind. Temperatures will stay below average across most regions.

Looking ahead, Jo Robinson anticipates more settled weather later next week, marking the end of the month and season. Very warm or hot conditions may impact the South.
