Chappell Roan criticises invasive fan behaviour

Chappell Roan has expressed frustration over fan behaviour when approached in public. The 26-year-old singer-songwriter addressed the issue in two TikTok videos, criticising the intrusive actions she encounters while out and about.

While public attention is expected for celebrities, it can become invasive for those simply trying to live their daily lives. In the videos, Roan criticised people who assume her fame allows them to treat her differently in public.

In one clip shared with her three million TikTok followers, she questioned: “Would you approach a random woman and ask for a photo, and then get mad if she refuses? Would you be upset if she prioritises her own time over yours? Would you stalk her family?”

She highlighted how ‘abuse, harassment, and stalking’ have become normalised behaviours towards famous individuals. Roan stated: “I don’t care that it’s considered normal or comes with my career. That doesn’t make it acceptable, and it doesn’t mean I want it or like it.”

She added: “I don’t want whatever entitlement you think you have when you see a celebrity.” The singer argued that declining a photo isn’t selfish. She continued: “I don’t care if you think it’s selfish of me to refuse a photo, your time, or a hug. That’s abnormal, that’s strange. It’s odd how people think they know someone just because they see them online or enjoy their art. That’s creepy. I’m allowed to say no to creepy behaviour.”

Roan captioned one video: “This isn’t directed at anyone specific. It’s just my side of the story and my feelings.” The videos received mixed reactions online. Some criticised Roan’s stance, with one commenting: “She doesn’t realise being famous comes with many sacrifices?”

Others defended her, with one fan stating: “She doesn’t owe anyone anything, regardless of her fame… even if she has taken pictures with random people before, she has the right to decline.” Another suggested a middle ground, acknowledging celebrities’ right to say no while noting that respectful requests from fans aren’t necessarily creepy.

They commented: “I’m conflicted because she’s right; she has every right to say no. But asking for a picture or a hug respectfully isn’t creepy behaviour.” Representatives for Chappell Roan have been contacted for further comment.
