CCTV footage has surfaced showing the moments before a British superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning. The footage, recorded by a nearby camera, reveals the luxury vessel’s rapid descent. A witness reported the yacht sank in just 60 seconds, with the Italian news agency ANSA quoting them: “You can clearly see what is happening. There was nothing that could be done for the vessel. Nick Sloane, an engineer known for leading the Costa Concordia salvage in 2013, stated that rescue divers are in a “critical” 24-hour period. He mentioned that some survivors might be trapped in air pockets within the ship, but the window to save them is closing.
Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a senior lecturer in mechanical engineering at Aston University, noted that the vessel’s swift sinking and intact condition could create small air pockets, potentially aiding in the survival of those trapped inside.
