Win for Meru MCAs as Senate upholds Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment

It is a win for the Meru County MCAs after the Senate upheld the decision to impeach Embattled Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

The Senate, dominated by Kenya Kwanza leaders, upheld all three accusations levelled against the first-term county h**d.

“The result of the votes indicates that the Senate has upheld all the charges, pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution and Article 33 of the County Government Act, the Senate has resolved to remove from office Governor Mwangaza by way of impeachment. She therefore ceases to hold office,”,” Speaker Amason Kingi ruled in the early hours of Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

The Senate judged her g****y of the first charge of gross violation of the constitution, with 26 senators voting in favour, approved, 4 voting against it, and, 14 abstained.

For the second charge of gross misconduct, 26 senators confirmed the charge, 2 voted against it and 14 abstained.

The third charge was a***e of office; 27 senators voted in favour of it, 1 against it, and 14 abstained.

The sustained efforts to impeach the governor was marred with controversy after a section of senators chastised Speaker Amason Kingi for not allocating enough time for voting to those attending the session virtually.

Following her successful removal from office, Mwangaza will be succeeded by her deputy, Mutuma M’Ethingia.
