Jimmy Carter hopes to vote for Kamala Harris despite health

Jason Carter, grandson of former president Jimmy Carter, shared that the 99-year-old wishes he could attend the Democratic National Convention (DNC), but eagerly anticipates voting for Kamala Harris.

He provided an update on Carter’s health, stating, “Papa is holding on, he is hopeful, and though his body may be weak tonight, his spirit is as strong as ever.”

Jason highlighted that his grandfather’s legacy isn’t about fame or awards but the lives he has positively impacted. He believes Kamala Harris embodies Jimmy Carter’s values.

“She knows what is right and fights for it. She understands leadership is about service, not selfishness. You can show strength with decency and achieve more with a smile,” Jason added.

Jimmy Carter has been in hospice care for 18 months. In June, Jason mentioned that Carter is no longer awake every day. This decline followed the passing of his wife Rosalynn in November 2023 at the age of 96.

Declining health concerns

After 77 years of marriage, Jason expressed, “None of us really understand what it’s like for him right now.”

“We have to accept that some aspects of the human spirit are beyond comprehension.”

Jason also relayed Carter’s determination to vote for Kamala Harris, sharing a conversation Carter had with his son Chip.

Carter will turn 100 on October 1, shortly before Harris faces Donald Trump in the presidential election.

Jason noted his grandfather remains “more alert and interested in politics and the war in Gaza” in recent days.

Even in his early 90s, Carter was active, building homes and teaching Sunday school as recently as 2020.

Carter moved into hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, which he built with Rosalynn in 1961.

Jason, who resides in Atlanta, remarked that Plains has provided Carter with immense support, making it the ideal place for this stage of his life.

The Carters have deeded their property to the National Park Service, planning to turn their home into a museum after their deaths.

Carter was last seen publicly at Rosalynn’s memorial in November, in a wheelchair and covered by a blanket. He has since remained out of the public eye after ending medical interventions. He will be buried beside her.
