‘Get down to work, serve Kenyans with distinction’ – Ruto tells new cabinet

President William Ruto has asked the new broad-based cabinet to get down to work and serve Kenyans with distinction.

Ruto’s message comes after witnessing the swearing-in of the new Attorney General, Dorcas Oduor, and Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, Beatrice Moe Askul, at State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.

Oduor takes over the post that initially became vacant following the dismissal of Justin Muturi. Muturi, along with Cabinet Secretaries, were relieved of their duties when President Ruto dissolved his cabinet before he appointed a new one.

Askul, the new Cabinet Secretary for East African Affairs, also took her oath of office. Askul was the latest cabinet appointee and was vetted and approved by parliament before taking the oath.

“The newly-appointed broad-based cabinet must now get down to work and serve Kenyans with distinction.

“Witnessed the swearing-in of Attorney-General Dorcas Oduor and East Africa Community and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary Beatrice Asikul, State House Nairobi. Ms Oduor is the first w***n Attorney-General in Kenya,” Ruto’s statement, on X, said.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also witnessed the swearing-in event at the State House.

“Congratulations Senior Counsel Dorcas Agik Oduor and Beatrice Askul on assuming office as our next Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary for East African Community and Regional Development, respectively,” the DP said in a statement on X.

Oduor’s resume

The seasoned lawyer currently serving as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya holds a Masters of Arts in International Conflict Management (UoN), a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree (UoN), and a Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law.

She has previously served as H**d of Economic, International, and Emerging C****s Departments at the ODPP and Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Askul’s experience

She has worked as Director of the Rift Valley Water Services Board, Chairperson Technical Committee of the Rift Valley Water Services Board, Chairperson Audit Committee of the Rift Valley Water Services Board, Project Officer of the AMREF Kenya Turkana Project, and Relief Officer for the Oxfam Turkana Relief Program.

At one point she served as a member of the Rift Valley Water Services Board. Moe has also specialised skills in the development and management of community affairs, towards behavioral and social change in communities.
