In his company was the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin and Acting Police IG Gilbert Masengeli.

According to reports, Jumaisi escaped in the morning hours alongside 12 suspects from Eritrea who were detained at the police station over staying in the country illegally.

Per a police report, the matter was reported by two police officers manning the cells, saying they were making a routine visit to the cells with the canteen manager to serve the inmates breakfast when they discovered the suspects had escaped.

“The scene has been visited by sub-county police officer Gigiri who found out that the escape was granted through an opening on the wire mesh roof at the basking,” the police report read.

According to police, a manhunt has been launched for the fugitives, the activity being overseen by Kanja as perhaps the first act since his nomination as police IG was approved.

“Pursuant to article 2A section 12 of the National Police Service Act, Section 8 of the Public Appointments and Parliamentary Approval Act, the Senate approved the nomination of Mr Douglas Kanja for the appointment for the position of Inspector General of Police,” Speaker of the Senate, Amason Kingi, formally announced.

His appointment comes hardly a week after he was vetted for the new role by the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security and the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations.
