The award-winning superyacht, The Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily during a tornado early on Monday. Authorities have recovered one body, but six individuals, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, remain unaccounted for.

The British-flagged yacht, originally named the Salute, measures 56 metres and was constructed in 2008 by the Italian shipyard Perini Navi. It underwent a refit in 2020. The yacht features a 75-metre aluminium mast, the tallest of its kind globally and the second tallest overall. It can achieve a maximum speed of 15 knots and has a displacement of 473 tonnes.

The interior, styled in a Japanese theme with light and dark beige tones and dark wood, was designed by the French firm Remi Tessier. The yacht also boasts a teak deck. It received accolades for its design, winning best exterior styling at The World Superyacht Awards in 2009 and best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008.

The superyacht accommodates 12 guests in six bedrooms—one master suite, three double rooms, and two twin rooms—and can support a crew of 10. According to Shipspotting.com, it is owned by Revtom Limited, with Mike Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, listed as the sole shareholder.

Mike Lynch’s connection to the yacht’s name is significant. His PhD thesis and the software that brought him success were based on Bayesian inference, a statistical method rooted in an 18th-century theory that enhances predictive accuracy.

The price to charter The Bayesian is not specified, but comparable yachts are typically listed at around £170,500 per week.
