Malfunction at China’s Detian Waterfall kills one, injures 60 tourists

A malfunction at a popular tourist attraction in China has resulted in one death and numerous injuries. The incident occurred at the Detian Waterfall in Guangxi, Southern China, where about 60 tourists were hurt.

The waterfall, located on the Chinese-Vietnamese border, features an attraction called the ‘Magic Carpet’. This conveyor belt takes visitors up a hill to enjoy scenic views. However, on Saturday, 10 August, the ride malfunctioned, moving backwards and causing passengers to tumble down the hill and collide.

The site’s management has expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and friends and to those injured. Local authorities quickly responded and launched an investigation. Assistance is being provided to the injured and their families, and findings from the investigation will be released soon.

An eyewitness described the terrifying scene to the Global Times, noting the ride stopped suddenly and slid back. This caused people to collide due to inertia, breaking safety panels. Another witness reported hearing many screams during the incident.

The tourist attraction’s social media accounts announced the ride’s closure on Saturday evening. It will remain closed for inspection and repairs, with no reopening date set. Tourists who bought tickets online can get refunds through the purchase platform.

This isn’t the first issue with the Magic Carpet. In January 2023, the ride malfunctioned, descending suddenly and forcing tourists to walk up the mountain. That incident was less severe, with only minor injuries, and the ride was repaired within two hours.
