Weather: Heaviest rain in a decade drenching millions of Australians along nation’s east coast – when the big wet will end

A weather system stretching across much of Australia’s east coast continues to inundate millions of Australians with the heaviest August rainfall in a decade.

Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales are the worst hit by the weather, with falls of more than 100mm recorded on a large scale and the Bureau of Meteorology warning of flooding from Mackay to Byron Bay.

In the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday, Samuel Hill north of Rockhampton received 176mm of snow, while in the first half of this week some regions near the Queensland-NSW border received more than 240mm.

“The rainfall and flooding continue to pose a risk to parts of south-east Queensland and north-east New South Wales,” said Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Miriam Bradbury.

An upper level trough and moist air currents on land will bring wet weather. From Thursday onwards the weather will weaken as the trough moves further from land to land.

The Bureau said large waves can also cause dangerous surf and erosion near beachfront properties.

“Many parts of the northern rivers, including Ballina and Lismore, have seen their heaviest August rain in a decade,” said Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe.

Another weather system is also bringing rain to the Perth region, while the rest of the country is seeing mostly fine weather, with some showers in Adelaide and Hobart.
