Moderate earthquake rattles Los Angeles, no major damage

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck Los Angeles at 12:20 p.m. PT, as reported by the US Geological Survey. Initially recorded at 4.7, the intensity was later adjusted to 4.4.

The quake, at a shallow depth of 7.5 miles, occurred directly beneath populated areas, making it widely felt despite its moderate strength.

A nursing school instructor in Glendale described the event to KABC, explaining how the building shook violently, differing from the usual rolling motions experienced during quakes. She had to hold onto a door frame for stability.

Earthquakes measuring between magnitude 4 and 5 typically result in light shaking with minimal to no damage.

Recent seismic activity in the region includes a magnitude 4.9 quake near Barstow on July 29 and a magnitude 5.2 quake near Bakersfield last Tuesday.

Following the quake, the Los Angeles Fire Department initiated earthquake mode. Crews from 106 fire stations inspected their districts, reporting no injuries or structural damage upon completion.

Pasadena Fire Department Deputy Chief Anthony James, who felt the quake while driving, recounted the experience to KABC. He initially thought the ground was moving away from under him and quickly realised it was an earthquake.
