Nasa’s Insight finds liquid water reservoir beneath Mars’s surface

Seismic data from NASA’s Insight Lander has unveiled a significant reservoir of liquid water deep beneath Mars’s surface. Previous research confirmed frozen water at the planet’s poles and water vapour in its atmosphere. However, this marks the first discovery of liquid water on Mars.

Prof Michael Manga from the University of California, Berkeley, highlighted the importance of this discovery. He explained that water is crucial in shaping a planet’s evolution, addressing the mystery of where Mars’s water disappeared.

Evidence from various studies has shown that ancient rivers and lakes once existed on Mars, but the planet has been dry for three billion years. The loss of its protective atmosphere led to the evaporation of surface water. Prof Manga noted that much of Earth’s water is underground, suggesting a similar scenario for Mars.

This finding hints at the potential for habitable environments deep below the Martian surface. Understanding Mars’s water cycle is essential for comprehending the planet’s climate evolution, surface conditions, and interior.

NASA’s Insight mission, which ended in December 2022, recorded seismic waves on Mars for four years. The lander detected nearly 1,319 quakes, allowing scientists to infer the underground material composition. These findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The techniques used by Insight are similar to those employed on Earth to search for water, oil, and gas.
