Duties

Basic Function of Position:

  • Works under the supervision and direction of the Community Liaison Office (CLO) Coordinator; the CLO Communications Assistant has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • The CLO Communications Assistant is responsible for producing a weekly newsletter, “The Roar,” and managing website and social media content to promote Mission events and community wellbeing.
  • Develops an editorial calendar, organizes online content, and improves communication by maintaining a mission-wide events calendar.
  • Provides community members with the most current information available regarding life, activities, and events in Nairobi.
  • Assists the CLO in the development, execution, and management of post programs to foster and maintain high morale among community members.
  • Requires Public Trust Clearance.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of work experience in education, administration, public relations, media/communication, marketing, or public/community outreach is required.

Job Knowledge:

  • Pre-hire (Operational):
    • Must understand and know how to design and update online media platforms including Facebook and web pages.
    • Must be familiar with the general culture of the country and have information on interesting places to plan trips for the American community at the Mission.
    • Must have knowledge of civic and educational activities available.
  • Post-hire (Organizational):
    • Ability to identify, assess, and conceptualize how best to use the full range of information the Embassy Community needs or wants to move morale and the community in a positive way.
    • Must have good knowledge of Department of State and Mission Nairobi activities and electronic communication delivery systems.

Education Requirements:

  • Completion of Secondary School is required.

Evaluations:

  • Language: Level IV (Fluent) speaking/writing/reading in English is required.

Pre-Hire Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to write clearly and effectively engaging, factual, and informative articles.
  • Ability to identify, assess, and conceptualize how best to use the full range of information the Embassy Community needs or wants to move morale and the community in a positive way.
  • Must have excellent customer relations, interpersonal, and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Must have excellent written editorial and oral communication skills, with the ability to be resourceful and creative with digital marketing and engage in online forums.
  • Keyboard skills with accuracy required.
  • Must be able to self-manage schedule.
  • On-the-job training will be provided to gain familiarity with Salesforce, Adobe InDesign, Canva, Foreign Affairs Network (FAN), and other relevant online courses.
  • Knowledge of desktop publishing, Microsoft Suite, databases, digital editing, and social media platforms is required.

  • The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.
