Emma Finucane became the first British woman in 60 years to win three medals at the same Olympics, with Team GB bosses praising her “incredible” haul.

Welsh cyclist Finucane and weightlifter Emily Campbell took bronze on the final day in Paris, taking Britain’s total medal tally to 65, one more than in Tokyo three years ago.

“Sixty-five medals is a brilliant achievement,” said Andy Anson, Chief Executive of the British Olympic Association. “It’s our second-best ever tally overseas. That’s something incredible to celebrate.”

Team GB fell short of their target of a top five finish in the medal table, finishing seventh with just 14 gold medals. ‘It’s frustrating,’ added Anson. ‘We would have liked to be back in the top five but the breadth of medals is important.’

After Team GB equalled their medal haul from London 2012, UK Sport chairman Katherine Grainger said: ‘Sixty-five medals is extraordinary. We thought London 2012 was the biggest success, so to do it in another country is brilliant.’

Britain’s medal tally is actually their worst since 2004. But Anson added: ‘It’s up to UK Sport, the sports and ourselves to work together to find out if there’s anything that needs to be addressed so we can continually improve.

“We’ve had 17 fourth places and a few near golds. Bring on Los Angeles, because we’re going up the medal table again.”
