Pete Davidson’s ‘unpredictable’ career and feeling ‘miserable’ after Madelyn Cline split led to rehab stint

According to an insider, Pete Davidson’s “erratic” behavior and his grief over the split from Madelyn Cline led him to check into rehab.

Last month, it was reported that the 30-year-old comedian had checked into a wellness center to seek treatment for his mental health, just days after he admitted to fans that he had quit drugs.

Davidson split from Cline, 26, that same month after nearly a year of dating. A source who saw Pete just days before rehab told DailyMail.com exclusively: ‘Pete is miserable most of the time.’

According to the source, Pete is only “truly happy” when he’s working and on stage.

Aside from his Prehab Tour, which was originally scheduled to run until mid-October but has now been cancelled, the star didn’t have many film or TV projects lined up.

Four of his upcoming projects have recently been completed or are still in post-production.

The source explained: ‘Pete has no stability in his life right now. He’s better off when he’s got his s**t together and everything’s stable.

“For the first time in his career, things are unpredictable and that’s what makes him so stressful. There’s a lot of pressure that comes with uncertainty and that stress can lead to bad thoughts.”

The insider claimed that despite unexpectedly canceling the remainder of his comedy tour – which disappointed fans and cost money – the star had to prioritize his mental health.

The source said: ‘He has to have the right mentality to be on stage and perform in front of thousands of people.

“He acts like an actor on stage because he’s happy there. Sometimes people don’t even know what he’s going through because he’s joking about his life and laughing with his fans.”

Pete is getting the most support from his family and friends, following his split from Outer Banks star Cline.

The source said: ‘Some of his closest friends didn’t know he was going back into treatment until they read about it in the news.’

“Whatever happens, they wish him the best and know he will bounce back if he gets the help he needs,” a source said.

Months ago, his friends are said to have woken him up about his spending pattern.

“He spent his money and his friends gave him a wake-up call. He spent thousands of dollars on private jets and travel,” the source claimed.

DailyMail.com has contacted representatives for Pete Davidson for comment.

Days before he entered a spa this summer, Pete revealed that he still smokes weed, after admitting to using other drugs in the past.

During his stand-up comedy show on July 20 at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, he told the audience, “I can’t stop [weed] not yet. It’s all I got left. I done coke and ketamine and all the pills and all that shit. All I got left is weed, so it’s almost over, but I’m still holding on for a little while.’

He also described his near-death experience in which he “drove into a garage” in Los Angeles in March 2023, prompting him to be charged with reckless driving.

The misdemeanor charge was dropped on July 18, 2024, after he completed 50 hours of community service with a neurosurgeon, took a safe driving course, and visited a morgue.

According to an eyewitness who spoke exclusively to DailyMail.com, Pete told the crowd at Ocean Casino’s Ovation Hall that he had received a phone call about his charges being dropped and responded, “Hooray? I think so. I did something bad. It’s not really something to celebrate.”

Despite the conditions imposed by the court, Pete said he had “a good year” and was “very grateful” for his life.

Pete announced he would be leaving Saturday Night Live in 2022 after eight years on the late-night sketch comedy show. Last year, he served as an executive producer and starred in Bupkis, a Peacock original, but left after one season.

“I’ve always seen Bupkis as a window into my life because it’s so personal and about my issues and my family,” the King of Staten Island star said at the time.

“After nearly a decade of my personal life in the media, I wanted a chance to tell my story my way. Of all the work I’ve ever done, Bupkis is by far the one I’m most proud of.”

He continued, “I also feel like this part of my life is over. I’m really looking forward to this next chapter and I want you to see the work. Thank you to everyone who supports me because I am eternally grateful.”

Pete was previously admitted to a rehabilitation center in July 2023 for treatment of his post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder.

Last year, the star even joked about his “post-rehab glow” during a comedy show in Atlantic City.

A source said PEOPLE Wednesday that mental health has “always been a priority” for the actor.

Davidson began his rehabilitation after performing over 200 live stand-up comedy shows across the country.

In July 2023, he was admitted to a rehabilitation center for treatment of his post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder.

The star even joked about his “post-rehab glow” during a comedy show in Atlantic City last year.

Another source told PEOPLE that “Pete checks himself into rehab frequently to work through these issues. His friends and family have been supportive during this time.”
