Scott Cam has some advice for would-be contestants hoping to make a fortune on Channel Nine’s ratings juggernaut The Block.
The 61-year-old presenter of the program for twenty years, says that if Blockheads do not want to be left empty-handed when their house goes under the hammer, they would be better off renovating their homes for the market and not for themselves.
Cam spoke out after House 2 was rejected from last year’s controversial season of The Block after it failed to reach its $2.97 million reserve price.
Blockheads Leah and Ash Milton eventually sold their renovation for $3.125 million, four months after The Block finale in November.
With the popular reality show’s 20th anniversary coming up on Monday, Cam is opening up about where he thinks the 2023 contestants went wrong.
“There were reasons why houses didn’t do well last year: the kitchen was too small, too awkward,” the TV veteran said news.com.au.
He added that Blockheads should not provide the homes with their personal taste and character.
‘[It’s] “Madness,” he added, “they can’t live in that.”

Real estate guru Shelly Craft agreed, and also voiced her own criticism of the way recent Blockheads have approached the competition.
“In the industry, you either build to sell — flip — or you build your family home. They’re two specific ways to renovate,” she told the publication.
“And I think some of the participants get a little lost in the fact that there are so many great products available to them. They want to put everything in one home and that’s a little overwhelming for a family that just wants to buy a single-family home.”

Kristy and Brett’s House 3 was another 2023 renovation that yielded disappointing results.
It went into the auction with a minimum price of $2,970,000 and went under the hammer for $3,035,000, making the Blockheads just a Profit of $65,000.
However, fan favorites Gian and Steph walked away with a smile on their face as they sold their property for a staggering $5 million, netting them $100,000 in prize money and a profit of $1,650,000.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to a lot of excitement when the hit renovation series airs on Monday.

This comes after it was revealed that a few more couples would break up before the show ends this year, according to an insider, with a producer confirming that one team is leaving after just five weeks.
