Police urged to stay vigilant after minimal unrest

Police chiefs received a directive from Sir Keir Starmer to stay “on high alert” following the anticipation of significant disorder, which largely did not occur on Wednesday. The prime minister informed an emergency COBRA meeting that the robust policing and swift justice in response to the past week’s unrest had “undoubtedly” served as a deterrent.

A Number 10 source stated that while the PM praised the police and justice system, his primary message emphasised the need to “maintain high alert.” COBRA, often convened during emergencies such as civil unrest, held its third high-level meeting after more than a week of violence triggered by the Southport stabbings.

False online rumours suggested the suspect, Axel Rudakubana, was an asylum seeker, though he was actually born in Cardiff.

Despite expectations of significant trouble on Wednesday, with 6,000 specialist officers on standby amid warnings of over 100 far-right marches, the night saw “minimal disorder and only a handful of arrests,” according to police chiefs. Instead, thousands of anti-racism campaigners marched peacefully.

Authorities have jailed some rioters for up to three years, and other suspects continue to face court proceedings. The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) reported 483 arrests and 151 charges related to the unrest, with numbers expected to rise significantly.

Sir Keir underscored the importance of not easing up, noting the lengthy sentences had “sent a very powerful message.” He emphasised ongoing coordination with law enforcement to ensure appropriate officer deployment and sustained criminal justice responses.

NPCC chairman Gavin Stephens remarked that those “intent on violence and destruction have not gone away,” and police remain “very focused on the weekend.” He suggested increased patrols at lower league football matches due to potential flare-ups as the football season begins. Stephens highlighted the need for continued vigilance, with many events still being advertised online, indicating there is “no complacency” in their approach.
