Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow now has a different name, according to DC Studios’ co-chief James Gunn, and he’s also explained why he dropped the “Legacy” from Superman.
When Gunn unveiled the first “Gods and Monsters” phase of the rebooted DCU, it was planned to kick off with Superman: Legacy.
In February 2024, Gunn announced that the title had undergone a slight change, and it’d simply be called Superman.
It appears something similar has happened with Milly Alcock’s Supergirl movie. Woman of Tomorrow is a nickname that stems from the comics (specifically, Tom King’s Supergirl run), but Gunn and the powers that be at DC have decided to ditch the subtitle.
James Gunn confirms Supergirl has a new title
Gunn confirmed the film’s new name in an extensive interview with Rolling Stone. Unsurprisingly, it’s now called Supergirl.
“I’m always cutting,” Gunn said, going on to explain how “Legacy” was cut from Superman’s name during its “postmortem.”
“A premortem is you get together with your group that’s doing the project. It’s usually about a couple months before shooting, and you go, hypothetically, ‘If it’s an epic disaster, what are the things that we’re doing today that are going to cause it to be an epic disaster? Everyone here can speak freely,’” he said.
“The things you find on other productions are the things that people are whispering. ‘Oh, God, I don’t know why they cast that actor — he doesn’t fit the role.’
“Or, ‘The production designer’s never on time.’ One of the things I brought up was it was called Superman: Legacy. Even though I was the one that gave it that title, I just wasn’t sure.”
Gunn confessed he was “sick” of the common “title, colon, other-name thing” in superhero movie titles. “And then also it seemed to be looking back when we’re looking forward, even though it does have to do with legacy in the movie itself. And everybody was like, ‘Oh, yeah, no, change it,’” he added.
It appears to have been the right call. Superman is tracking to open with at least $140 million domestically in its first weekend, and that’s with the likes of Jurassic World Rebirth and 28 Years Later in cinemas.
In the same interview, Gunn also addressed Batman’s future in the DCU – including his plans for The Brave and the Bold. Whether or not he’s keen on the idea remains unclear, but there’s a good argument for why Robert Pattinson should be the DCU’s Batman.
