Police arrested Prasith (surname withheld), a 52 year old former assistant village head in Ban Non Rawiang, following the fatal shooting of Thanaphon (surname withheld), a 43 year old man found dead in a sugarcane field in Ban Non Rawiang, Bung Phalai subdistrict, Kaeng Sanamnang district, Nakhon Ratchasima.

The victim, who had 20 methamphetamine pills and some cannabis by his side, was shot and killed on November 29. The incident followed an argument after a fire broke out in Prasith’s sugarcane field, prompting him to ask neighbours for help to extinguish the flames. During this time, Thanaphon was seen nearby, and Prasith believed he was the one who had set the field on fire.

According to the investigation, after the confrontation, Prasith returned home, fetched a gun, and shot Thanaphon about 50 metres from his house. He then discarded the spent shell casings from a .380 pistol and hid the weapon at a friend’s house.

Officers from Kaeng Sanamnang Police Station made significant progress after questioning three neighbours who had assisted in extinguishing the fire. The investigation revealed Prasith’s involvement, and after locating the gun at the friend’s house, they arrested him. The weapon was confirmed to be the one used in the crime.

Despite Prasith’s denial of all charges, the police gathered strong evidence, including a spent shell casing found at the crime scene. The victim’s body was brought back to his home by rescue teams and is set for cremation on December 4, after a three-night Buddhist prayer ceremony, reported KhaoSod.

Prasith is now facing charges of premeditated murder, and further investigation is underway.
