Southport rioter hit by bricks during vigil chaos

A Southport rioter, who went viral after being struck in the head, chest, and groin by bricks, is a father-of-two known locally as a ‘party animal’.

Brian Spencer, a 33-year-old painter and decorator, was involved in the riots that disrupted a vigil for three girls killed at a Taylor Swift dance class. The incident occurred on Monday.

Footage shows Spencer dancing flamboyantly in front of officers holding riot shields. A brick then hits him in the back of the head. Another brick bounces off the shields and strikes his chest, causing him to stagger. As he clutches his head in pain, a third brick hits his groin area.

Friends of Spencer said, ‘People claim the protesters were outsiders, but Brian lives nearby. Everyone knows him. He’s known for partying and probably got carried away last night. He’ll be hurting today.’

The actions of Spencer and the rioters faced widespread condemnation. They were accused of exploiting a grieving town. The violence erupted shortly after the vigil for Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, began.

Eight other children suffered stab wounds, with five in critical condition at Alder Hay hospital. Two adults were also seriously injured while trying to protect the children at the dance club.

The Prime Minister, Home Secretary, and police chiefs criticised the violence, which was triggered by a false name of the suspect spreading on social media.

At least 56 officers were injured during the riots, described by the Chairman of Merseyside Police Federation as a ‘sustained and vicious attack’. The community had to clean up the aftermath outside Southport mosque.

Residents were seen with brushes and shovels, condemning the violence caused by the ‘hooligans’. Norman Wallis, chief executive of Southport Pleasureland, helped at the junction of Sussex Road and St Luke’s Road. He remarked, ‘What those hooligans did last night was horrendous. It looked like a war zone. People causing mayhem weren’t from Southport. The real residents are here today cleaning up.’
