Republican voters shared their views on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as speculation grows about Kamala Harris’ vice-presidential options. Many see the Democratic governor as a leading candidate.
These comments came after supporters left former President Donald Trump’s rally at Harrisburg’s New Holland Arena on Wednesday night. This event was Trump’s first campaign appearance in Pennsylvania since the near assassination in Butler on July 13.
Shapiro has become a possible choice for Kamala Harris if she secures the Democratic nomination for the 2024 election.
The 51-year-old governor has earned recognition in Pennsylvania for his stance against antisemitism, efforts in law enforcement recruitment and retention, and support for abortion rights.
Outside the rally, attendees wearing American flags and Trump merchandise expressed to a news agency that a ticket featuring Harris and Shapiro was not favourable.
Mark commented, “I have mixed feelings. The one good thing would be that when they lose, we lose both Josh Shapiro and Kamala Harris.”
Valerie stated, “If Shapiro actually signs on… no. I would lose all respect for him.”
Sherry said, “I’m not a big fan of Josh Shapiro, and I think picking him would hurt her [Harris] candidacy.”
Wayne added that Harris’ choice of running mate would not alter her past record. “She can pick whomever she wants. I think that when and if the media shows Harris’ record, people are going to realize that she’s a little better than a communist.”
He continued, “It’s about her and not about America. Look what she did to San Francisco and California.”
Before becoming a central figure in the 2024 presidential race, Shapiro was elected as Pennsylvania’s 48th governor in 2022 for a four-year term. He previously served as Pennsylvania’s attorney general from 2017 to 2023 and hails from Kansas City, Missouri.
Shapiro is considered a strong contender on Harris’ list for potential vice-presidential picks for the election on 5 November.
Other names being considered include Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
A news agency has reached out to the Harris campaign and Shapiro’s office for comments.
