Newcastle are ‘set to offer Anthony Gordon a new contract when he returns from holiday’ – as they look to ward off interest from Liverpool in the former Everton star

  • Gordon had previously been open to the possibility of leaving and joining Liverpool
  • The 23-year-old had a stunning season last season with 21 goals
  • The winger’s form earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024 in England

Newcastle are set to offer Anthony Gordon a new contract amid recent speculation over a move to Liverpool, Reuters reports.

The winger had a great season last season, finishing the campaign with 11 goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League games.

Gordon’s form with the Magpies earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s England team that reached the final of the European Championship, but he was only given one minute of the team’s run.

According to The AthleticsNewcastle are keen to reward the 23-year-old for his performances and will begin contract negotiations next week when he returns from his summer break.

The news comes as links remain between the player and a return to his hometown club in what would be a sensational move to the red half of Merseyside.

Newcastle held talks with Liverpool over a potential transfer, while the team attempted to avoid PSR sanctions by raising around £70m through player sales before the reporting deadline of June 30.

Gordon moved to St James’ Park from Everton in January 2023 for £40million, where he progressed through the youth ranks and made 78 first-team appearances.

Despite his links to Goodison Park, Mail Sport revealed the youngster was open to a transfer if a deal could be struck.

However, last month Magpies manager Eddie Howe insisted he had no indication the striker had been fazed by the saga.

“Anthony is an integral part of what we do. He needs a bit of a rest. He’s had a very long season and the Euros will have been emotional for him as well. I’m confident he’ll be fine,” Howe said.

“I think you can only judge Anthony on what he has given Newcastle on the pitch. He is committed. We have not had any conversations this summer where it has been divisive or negative.

“He’s always been the Anthony Gordon who has given Newcastle absolutely everything and I want to make that clear to all our supporters. By the time he comes back, he’ll be ready.”

Newcastle have added Lloyd Kelly, John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos to their squad this summer, while the loan of Lewis Hall has been made permanent and they have also agreed a deal to sign William Osula from Sheffield United.

Howe’s team welcome newly promoted Southampton to the north-east of England on August 17 for their opening Premier League match.
