Fire destroys property of unknown value at Nyayo Market

A section of traders are counting losses after a fire incident at Nyayo Market within Ngara area in Nairobi County.

The fire which razed down several structures and items of unknown value occurred on Sunday evening. 

Area locals joined in efforts to put out the fire before a fire engine from the Nairobi County arrived. 

Nairobi Regional Police commander Adamson Bungei confirmed the incident noting that the fire razed down 50 structures. 

He, however, noted that no one was injured during the incident, Bungei added that investigations to determine the cause of the fire are currently ongoing. 

“We are yet to determine the cause of the fire for now but a team of investigators is on the ground pursuing the matter,” Bungei stated. 

Traders lamented that the incident has caused them losses as majority of them had piled up stocks ready for the festive season.

The latest comes in the wake of perennial mysterious fires that have continuously affected Kenyan markets. 

In August this year, four people lost their lives and property worth millions was destroyed following a fire incident at Toi Market in Nairobi. 

The four who died had arrived at the scene to protect their goods from the inferno, traders who were nearby attempted to save the, however, the fire reigned supreme and they perished.

“They rushed to the market to save their goods but unfortunately the flames overpowered them. Traders who were nearby tried to rescue them but they could not complete the process and they perished in the incident,” Kenneth Jumba, the market chairman told the press at the time.

The traders blamed the Nairobi fire department for failing to respond to the incident on time. They also faulted the market leaders accusing them of incompetence.
