Luxury superyacht sinks off Kefalonia after crew error

A stunning Italian luxury superyacht, ‘Ethos’, began sinking off the coast of Kefalonia after a crew member left a side door open, causing water to flood in. The 150ft yacht, which costs £180,000 per week to rent, was seen taking on water in Paleokaravo Bay.

A diver has been called to inspect local reefs as guards continue to monitor recovery efforts after the yacht ran aground in Evretis Bay. Local media reports that the inflow occurred because a crew member could not close the door in time when the weather changed.

Five tourists and five crew members, part of the yacht’s hotel staff, have safely disembarked. The award-winning Maltese-flagged yacht accommodates up to 12 guests, offering a luxurious charter experience with features like an onboard gym, deck jacuzzi, and jet skis.

Footage showed the yacht off balance in the blue waters of Kefalonia, a picturesque island in the Ionian Sea. A private boat was also present as harbour guards monitored the situation. Waves were seen hitting the stern of the yacht, now some distance from the shore. The cause is still under investigation, but the yacht’s security systems reportedly worked, and the water was depleted without intervention.

Built-in 2014, the Luxury superyacht offers a ‘warm and welcoming’ atmosphere and includes amenities like a ‘beach club’, sauna, and gym. It accommodates 12 guests and nine staff, featuring a master suite and two VIP cabins. This luxury comes for £150,000 per week, rising to £180,000 during high season.

In a separate incident, five British tourists had to be rescued from their burning motorboat off the coast of Zakynthos last August. One passenger suffered burns when the 21ft craft caught fire 250 feet from shore. The cause of the blaze is still unknown, but the flames quickly engulfed the boat. Footage showed black smoke billowing from the wreckage as rescue teams intervened.

Two months earlier, British holidaymakers were rescued from a burning boat off the island of Rhodes. The fire broke out 300 metres from Stenga beach in Archangelos, forcing passengers to jump into the water. The Greek coast guard reported that all 82 passengers were eventually brought to safety, though witnesses said children were traumatised by the ordeal.
