Groudon, one of the Weather Trio Legendaries, is back in Pokemon Go‘s 5-Star Raid battles. To stand strong against this bulky creature, here are the best counters you can use to target its weaknesses.
Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza, the three Legendaries from Gen 3’s Hoenn region, are known as the super-ancient Pokemon or the Weather Trio.
While Rayquaza can be harder to spot, both Groudon and Kyogre are returning to Niantic’s game for a limited time during the Delightful Days season, with Groudon doing so first.
So, if you’re after one or are trying to catch its Shiny variation, here’s all you need to have a smooth encounter.
Groudon weaknesses in Pokemon Go
As a pure Ground-type creature, Groudon is weak against Grass, Ice, and Water-type moves in Pokemon Go. Luckily, there are plenty of strong choices to pick from, so players should be able to build a strong winning team in a heartbeat.
However, it’s important to pay attention to Groudon’s resistances – Poison, Rock, and Electric – so you don’t end up playing into them.

How to get Groudon in Pokemon Go
Like all Legendaries, the mighty Groudon can only be obtained through Raid battles in Pokemon Go. This means trainers will have to challenge and defeat it to then attempt a catch with the Premier Balls given – the number they get will depend on their performance during the battle.
Trainers looking for a Groudon with perfect IVs or its Shiny variation can challenge the Legendary between June 5, 2025, and June 14, 2025, as it will return to the game as a Raid boss along with Mega Abomasnow.
Additionally, Groudon will be the center of a Raid Hour on June 11, 2025, from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM local time.
When challenging this Legendary, remember to use Golden Razz Berries and land Excellent Curveball Throws to increase your chances of catching it.
How to evolve Groudon into Primal Groudon
To turn a regular Groudon into Primal Groudon, players will need 400 Primal Groudon Energy to kick off the process, which can be triggered on the Pokemon’s main page.
The Primal Reversion is a process that allows both Kyogre and Groudon to regain their true power by absorbing the energy of nature that surrounds us, and similar to Mega Evolutions, you can activate it only for a limited time.
