Leny Yoro could be ruled out of the start of the season in huge blow for Man United… with the £59m signing spotted on CRUTCHES three days after limping off in defeat by Arsenal

  • Worries Yoro faces a lengthy injury absence two games into his United career
  • United are expected to provide an update on the 18-year-old’s fitness this week

There are growing fears that Manchester United’s new £59million signing Leny Yoro could be out of action for a lengthy period after just two games at Old Trafford.

Three days after the 18-year-old Frenchman limped onto the field in the defeat to Arsenal at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, he was seen at United’s training camp wearing crutches and his left leg in a protective boot.

Yoro, who made his debut against Rangers at Murrayfield just 11 days ago following his move from Lille, is likely to miss United’s final game against Liverpool in South Carolina this weekend, with concerns he may not feature at the start of the season.

On August 10, United play Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley, before starting their Premier League campaign at home to Fulham six days later.

United are expected to provide an update on Yoro’s fitness later this week, but the sight of the centre-back grappling with the team’s coach on the campus of the University of California in LA on Tuesday afternoon did not bode well. He suffered the injury just after the half-hour mark against Arsenal on Saturday and was forced off immediately after receiving treatment.

With Lisandro Martinez yet to return to training after playing for Argentina in the Copa America, manager Erik ten Hag can choose between Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof in central defence.

However, United are looking for a second centre-back this summer, having previously held talks with Bayern Munich over Matthijs de Ligt and seen an improved £50m bid for Jarrad Branthwaite rejected by Everton.

There could be more bad news to come for United after Rasmus Hojlund also went off in the first half of the game against Arsenal with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. However, Hojlund appeared to be moving relatively freely after the game and it is hoped that his injury is not too serious.

The setbacks are reminiscent of United’s struggles during last summer’s US tour, when Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo were injured and sidelined until November and December respectively.

Diallo injured his knee ligaments in the opening match against Arsenal in New Jersey and required surgery, while Mainoo injured his foot in the defeat to Real Madrid in Houston and was out of action for four months.
