Olympic Games: See the eerie similarity that could mean Kyle Chalmers is destined for gold in Paris

  • Kyle Chalmers qualified second fastest for the men’s 100m freestyle final
  • He recorded the exact same time with which he won gold in 2016
  • Chalmers will have a big task to beat China’s Pan Zhanle

Kyle Chalmers has reached the final of the men’s 100m freestyle in Paris and a strange coincidence could be a good sign for the Australian speed demon.

Chalmers qualified second for the main race, which takes place early on Thursday morning (AEST), with China’s Pan Zhanle setting the fastest time with a time of 47.21 seconds.

That was a lot better than Chalmers, who hit the wall in 47.58 seconds, a time the Australian will surely recognise.

Chalmers won gold in the men’s 100m freestyle in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, with exactly the same time as when he was a teenager.

He will have to be faster to beat Zhanle, but his performance in this year’s competition will encourage him.

More to follow.

It is the exact same time that earned him a gold medal in the same event in 2016
