Norah O’Donnell has retired from CBS Evening News after 12 years as anchor.
Per THRO’Donnell, 50, will become a special correspondent for CBS News at the network. He will provide interviews and other reporting for CBS News programming, with appearances on CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes.
O’Donnell wrote in a memo to staff Tuesday: “There is so much work to be proud of!
“But I’ve spent 12 years in the anchor chair here at CBS News, connected to a daily broadcast and the rigors of a relentless news cycle. It’s time to do something different.
“I am also pleased to announce that I have entered into a long-term commitment with CBS News. I will continue to tell stories and do great interviews, which have always been our hallmark.”

O’Donnell replaced Jeff Glor at CBS Evening News in July 2019, leading the broadcast from Washington, D.C.
She previously co-hosted CBS This Morning since 2012 and before that was CBS News’ chief White House correspondent during the Obama administration.
Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News and Stations, wrote in a memo to staff: “In this new role, Norah will have the time and support to tell even more of the extraordinary stories for which she is known.”

A source told the newspaper that CBS executives made O’Donnell a “low-ball” offer that they expected her to turn down, so they were surprised when she accepted.
This follows numerous reports that O’Donnell had fallen out with CBS News co-chair Neeraj Khemlani, a hard-nosed, cost-cutting executive who reportedly cast a wide net in her search for a potential replacement.
A CBS News spokesperson referred DailyMail.com to a statement provided to the Post denying that Khemlani wanted to replace O’Donnell.
“Wrong again. Neeraj led the effort to retain and re-sign about a dozen of our top anchors and correspondents over the past year, including Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King — and recruited a few new ones like Nate Burleson and Robert Costa,” the statement said.
In early April 2022, reports first emerged that O’Donnell had extended her contract with CBS, despite widespread rumors that she would be replaced.
However, there was no indication at the time of the amount in the contract that would keep her in the presenter’s chair through the 2024 elections and beyond.
In March of that year, industry speculation was rife that CBS would fire O’Donnell over her alleged “toxic behavior” and alleged $65,000 annual clothing allowance.
O’Donnell’s publicist Cindi Berger denied the allegations at the time, telling the Post: “It’s a clothing allowance, every anchor has one. That amount is incorrect.”
